A few months ago I decided to make some drastic changes when it came to my diet. I completely cut out refined sugars, processed foods, certain fats, replaced my coffee with herbal ( non caffeinated teas) and pop with water.

I did it cold turkey.

Why? Because I was feeling blah, and a small tiny voice within me was urging me to make changes to the way I was eating. I’m also not a spring chicken, meaning I’m getting older and my metabolism/energy levels are not what they used to be.

I have two small children who have loads of energy and they require me to have loads of energy too.

So something had to give.

I quit bad foods cold turkey, and truth be told If I was to do it all over again, I would eliminate things one by one. Quitting sugars overnight  sent my body into serious withdrawals but as bad as the detox was, my skin cleared, I had more energy and felt like a new person.

Sadly, I started re-introducing sugars ( the not so good for you type) into my diet because I thought why not? And after months of being without, my skin started breaking out again and I now know  that the secret to overall health and good skin ( for me and most) starts inside.

Of course what you put on your skin also matters. Our skin absorbs pretty much everything we put on it. Certain things are obviously out of our control, like the environment, but with a little effort, we can manage what we put on and in our bodies.

After trial and error, I’ve finally found a few chemical free products that are safe to use on my entire family and I’m sharing them below.

milknhonee.comDr. Bronner’s Peppermint Pure Castille liquid soap

You’ve probably seen this bottle at your local Walgreen’s or Target and wondered what it was. Well let me tell you that it’s probably the best thing that’s ever come in contact with my skin. This liquid shower soap will leave you feeling cleaner than I don’t know what; that’s how great it is. I was using the soap bar for a while but I’m now using it in liquid form and it’s just as good if not better.

It is free of synthetic preservatives, all ingredients are organic, certified fair trade and certified non-gmo. They also have a few other scents, but I have a thing with peppermint it makes me weak in the knees. I luh it!

milknhonee.comEveryone – 3 in 1 Citrus and Mint Soap

Another favorite of mine is Everyone’s soap. Love that it has a blend of essential oils and plant extracts. Safe enough to use on the girls although my go to for my littles is pictured below.

Everyone can be purchased at Target or online, they are also certified gluten free, non GMO and contain no synthetic fragrances.

milknhonee.comBabies & Up Body Lotion – Lemon Lavender

Love, love love these products for a number of reasons, the first one being how good they’ve been for my girls.  I also use their  Babies & Up Shampoo & Body wash ( not pictured because I ran out ).

Both the body wash and body lotion are moisturizing without leaving the skin overly greasy and safe to use daily. I chose the lemon/lavender combination not so much for the scent, but rather for the ingredients. Lavender and lemon both offer great benefits to the skin ( lemon is calming and lavender is soothing). Most importantly all three products mentioned thus far are all fair trade.

milknhonee.com

We’re all familiar with African Shea Butter, it needs no introduction and we all know its benefits. When all fails, African Shea Butter will always be a trusted friend.

milknhonee.comAcure (ultra hydrating body lotion)

If you have dry skin, this fragrance free lotion is the one for you. I used this during colder months and it did wonders for my skin. I wish they made bigger bottles because they don’t last very long and it can get a little expensive.

I get mine from Thrive Market and it costs a little less to go that route as opposed to purchasing it in store.  This lotion is made of organic ingredients, is fair trade, NON GMO, gluten free, contains probiotic and free of harsh chemicals found in most body moisturizers.

milknhonee.comAcure oil control facial moisturizer – sensitive facial cleanser

I also use Acure products for my face, I’ve used these two for a few months and so far so good. I purchased both products at my local health food stores but they are also available at Target, Amazon or Thrive Market.

I have very oily skin and the facial moisturizer has done a great deal to control it and done so naturally. Can I get an Amen?!

And there you have it folks!

Until next time.

I’ve been using the Dr. Bronner’s soap on my body for a few years and recently started using on my face and OMG! Why didn’t I do this sooner?! The results are amazing! You may want to try Face Flavors from TierraGoesGreen.com as a moisturizer, the combo is awesome.
