fried green tomatoes

Fried green tomatoes are the truth.

Apparently I’ve  been living under a rock when it comes to this southern delicacy. Do I know what fried green tomatoes are. Of course I do, I mean the name itself gives it away. The question here is not whether I know what they are, but rather have I ever had them… And the answer is NO. Mind you, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to taste them, but said opportunities were often presented during profound hunger, and I don’t know about you, but when I’m seriously hungry, I don’t like to experiment with foods my palate is not accustomed to. I play it safe every single time, the latter enables me to fill my belly with grub guaranteed to make my tastebuds smile.

Had I known that unripe tomatoes could bring so much joy, I would have tasted them long ago.

All that changed over the weekend when I stepped into my sister in law’s kitchen. The plan, frying the bad boys pictured above. In true blogger fashion, I chronicled the entire thing for you.

It took a little under 30 minutes to make from start to finish. Below is the tried and true recipe.

You will need:

salt , eggs, cornmeal ( we used white cornmeal) buttermilk,  and firm green tomatoes.

fried green tomatoesslice your tomatoes about 1/4 thick each

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetseason with salt ( we used seasoning salt for added flavor)

set the tomatoes aside for 30 min to allow the salt to absorb the water from them.

while you wait, prepare the buttermilk / egg concoction, which is simply mixing buttermilk with the eggs. tomatoes will be dipped prior to frying.

heat the vegetable oil about 5 minutes before the 30min are up to ensure that it’s very hot.

once the thirty minutes are up, evenly coat the tomatoes in egg mixture, dip in cornmeal and fry!

We also made a tangy sauce to go with the tomatoes, which literally took five minutes to make.

One part mayo

One part hawt sauce … yes HAWT

one part pickle relish of your choice ( we used sweet relish)

mix above ingredients and serve alongside tomatoes.

Truth be told, there are a million ways to fry green tomatoes ( I did some research) Some use flour, some yellow cornmeal, some only use eggs and no buttermilk. It all depends on what works for you.
