Holiday (mommy) Style – Zahra Sandberg

This month, in preparation for the holidays, I wanted to feature some of my favorite stylish moms.

I will be introducing you to some of my fellow bloggers on a weekly basis throughout the entire month.

They’ll dish about some of their family traditions and share tips on how to achieve simple holiday looks!

First up, Zahra!

I met Zahra over the summer at an event hosted by the Chicago blogger Network and was instantly drawn to her extremely friendly personality as well as the awesome black vest she was wearing!

Not only is she a fellow Chicagoan, she also happens be the mom of a handsome little fellow.

I caught up with her to chat Christmas, décor and of course style!

Read on!

What are some of your family’s holiday traditions?

My parents are Pakistani immigrants, so they didn’t grow up with Thanksgiving, but they definitely embraced the holiday wholeheartedly, probably because they love food so much! I was the first to prepare a ‘traditional’ turkey, like the Norman Rockwell kind of turkey, for my family. Before that we would eat my mom’s version, which was simply a less spicy version of her usual chicken.

I think of Christmas as an American holiday more than a religious one, so even though we are Muslim, I still love to celebrate the holiday. I was in the Christmas play at school growing up, and that is where I first fell in love with all things Christmas. Decor, Food, Movies, everything. I especially love Christmas music, my favorite song is O Holy Night. We spend Christmas with my husband’s family, and my Italian-American mother-in-law makes the most amazing Braciole, and we exchange gifts and spend quality time together.

I know that you have a bit of a passion for decor, how to you decorate your home for the festivities?

I like to use things from nature, like a few nicely shaped branches for a table centerpiece, greenery and pine cones for the mantle, and fresh cranberries in hurricane vases for my kitchen counters. I also love to add as many candles as I possible can everywhere. For my tree, I’m going to go all one color for the most impact, definitely red or white this year.

‘Tis the season for giving, as a busy mom, how do you stay afloat the hustle and bustle of gift shopping?

To be honest I am truly a procrastinator. I do a lot of last minute shopping at the mall or when all else fails, has been a lifesaver, especially with my prime membership I get everything in 2-days!

Anything special on your wish list this season?

I love an experience even more than a material thing, so I’d love to get tickets to a show, a gift certificate for a spa day, or best of all – a trip somewhere fun with the family.

Holiday fashion is synonymous with sparkles, metallic hues and shades of red, have you given any thought to your party outfits?

I never pass up an opportunity to dress up, and the holidays are a great time to do it! I’m loving all shades of red right now, and I am partial to all things lace – whether that be a dress, blouse, skirt, or even a jumpsuit.

Any holiday style tips for moms out there?

As moms, we are often so busy taking care of everyone else, it is easy to give up and not even try to be stylish. I suggest taking a little bit of time for yourself this season, get a fresh manicure and wear something that is comfortable but pretty, like a dress with a cardigan and pointed-toe flats, or a mid-length skirt and a cashmere turtleneck with a low chunky heel boot. You will feel better when you do, and when you look back at pictures – you won’t regret it!
